The Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore is an unaided minority Institute established in the year 1900 by Dr Ida Sophia Scudder- a third-generation American medical missionary in India. CMC is ranked amongst the top medical colleges in India. In 2018, the College celebrated the centenary of medical education, which began in 1918 with a Licentiate Medical Practitioner course to give medical training to women. The MBBS degree course was started in 1942 and the college became co-educational in 1947. Since CMC is a not-for-profit society, all available funds are used for student education, fund charitable outreach activities, to provide free or subsidised treatment to deserving patients or to invest in infrastructure.
