Shri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research was established in 1985 by Shri Ramachandra Educational and Health Trust as a not-for-profit self-financing institution. It had its origin as Shri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute (SRMC & RI). In 1994, the government of India declared SRMC & RI as a Deemed University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. In 2006, the nomenclature of the institution was changed to Shri Ramachandra University, as notified by the UGC and afterwards to SRMC & RI (DU) in 2017. Now, the name of DU has been changed to Shri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (Deemed to be University) by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India. It has been graded as category 1 status by UGC in 2018 and has been placed at 33rd rank among all Universities in India by MHRD NIRF ranking 2019. NAAC has reaccredited SRMC & RI (DU) Grade A with CGPA of 3.62 which is the highest to be awarded to a private medical Deemed University in India.
