Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) was established in 1984 by Dr G. Viswanathan (Minister in Tamil Nadu Govt.) as a self-financing institute named Vellore Engineering College. In 2001, the Vellore Engineering College was granted the University status by the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development. The institute is accredited Grade A by NAAC and is approved by UGC.
The main aim of VIT is to impart impeccable technical knowledge to its students so that they become technologically superior.
The courses offered at the institute engulf the needs of a wide range of industries like Automotive, Manufacturing, Aerospace, Architecture, Construction, Defence, Energy, Nano Technology, Environment and Transportation.

The process of admission in the college is both offline and online. For the offline mode, the students have to visit the college campus and complete the necessary steps from the office. For the online admission, the students have to visit the official website of the college first. Then on the home page, the students have to click on the ‘admissions’ tab. From there, they have to select the UG or the PG courses, which ever the want to pursue. They have to select the particular course and when they do that, just below the name of the course, there is a button of ‘apply now’. On clicking on this button, the students will be redirected to the online admission process of the college. The students have to fill the form from there and then wait for the results.
The college campus has all the facilities that is required by the modern students and the faculty. The campus is a green one to let the students learn about the green initiatives of the planet and contribute to the planet in some way. The campus is a fully wi-fi campus because high speed fast ever lasting internet is the must. There are two academic blocks in the college along with an admin block and an alpha block. There are auditoriums and conference facilities. There are smart classrooms in the college. This hi-tech equipment enables our faculty to conduct classes in a way that enable students to make use of every available resource from one point at the click of a button. These classrooms are also often used for seminars and events from time to time. The college engages in the activities like rain water harvesting, solid waste management, solar panels, and also lots of other general amenities in the college.
There are different fests organised in the college campus for the better lives of the students. The college faculty ensures that the lives of the students should not be dull for which they organise several fests and let the students take charge of those. The different fests organised by the college are Vibrance and Techno Vit. Vibrance is a national-level two-day cultural and sports festival is by far the largest cultural festival of VIT Chennai and since its inception has served as a pioneer of art and culture for the youth. Techno VIT has activities like workshops and technical events organised by the various schools of the University with the primary objective being, “To nurture professional skills and impart fine qualities to the students.” It also has gaming events to thrill and create an environment with fun and frolic.
There is also a students welfare centre in the college given to the students. The Student Council is a representative structure that acts as a voice of students which involves in the affairs of all Students’ related activities by partnering with the students, VIT administration and the parents. The centre enables the students to take responsibility for activities on the campus and demonstrate their managerial capacity to bring success in all such actions. Such opportunities enable them to acquire communication, planning and organizational skills that will benefit throughout their life. Thus, the main role of VIT Chennai Students Council is to create a partnership among the students, parents and the University authorities to create a sense of ownership among the students.
There are different indoor and outdoor sports facilities provided to the students like badminton, athletics, basket ball, handball, tennis, throw ball, etc. Students are given a chance to take part in the games and represent the college in different national, state, and inter college levels. This is one of the best extra curricular activities that the students are given special attention to.
One of the best activities involved in this college campus is the counselling services given by the college to its students. They offer a free and absolutely confidential one-to-one Counselling Service which provides psychological support to students, faculty, and staff. There are professional counsellors who help the students to identify their goals and potential solutions to problems which cause emotional turmoil; seek to improve communication and coping skills; strengthen self-esteem, and promote behaviour change and optimal mental health. The counsellor works with the students to help you identify your strengths, gain insight into your ways of thinking, feeling and behaving, gain insights for managing mental health issues like anxiety and depression.
There is also a specialised health centre in the college campus for taking care of the students in case of any emergencies. It is run by the Chettinad Medical Group. They offer facilities like:
