Aeronautical engineering is a study about the design and systems of an aircraft. It involves practical and theoretical understanding of materials, assembling parts, testing and maintenance of aircrafts. Professional engineers working in this domain have to be licensed aeronautical engineers.
It is one of the most popular branches of engineering. Aeronautics is derived from Greek words ‘Aer’ and ‘Nautike’ which mean ‘air’ and ‘navigation of the air’ respectively. This branch of engineering deals with the construction, design, maintenance of various aircrafts and their components. Those students who have interest in airplanes and their mechanisms and want to have a career in this field, they go for aeronautical engineering.
There are very less colleges in India that offer this course. Most of the colleges do offer aerospace engineering which is closely related to this field but still is different.
The specialisations in this field includes in aerodynamics, celestial mechanics, thermodynamics, propulsion among others. The candidates whop successfully complete this course get a starting package of 5 -6 LPA but it depends on the position and also the experience. This field of engineering is much different than the others. In this field of engineering, the students are supposed to excel in a lot of skills.
Some of those skills include:
The students pursuing this course can make a career in career in aircraft, airplanes, jet planes and space shuttles’ engineering, management and maintenance. This course involves both theoretical as well as practical knowledge. These specialised engineers have to deal with the development in aviation, defence and exploration systems. A recent report suggests that employment in the field of Aeronautical Engineering is expected to increase 6 per cent from 2016 to 2026.
For UG: The candidates must be a Class XII pass-out from a recognised board.
For PG: The candidates must be a B.Tech degree holder in the given areas like Aerospace, Aeronautical, Mechanical, Automobile, Chemical, Naval Architecture, Electrical, Electronics, Metallurgy & Material Science, Instrumentation, Mechatronics etc.
The candidates who have a diploma in aircraft maintenance engineering have the provision of acquiring degrees in Aeronautical Engineering course by qualifying the examination conducted by Aeronautical Society of India.
There are also institutes like IISc, IITs, and other Science Research institutions which accept scores received in the GATE examination. There is a minimum qualifying percentile for admission in this course for these institutions on the basis of which the candidates will be selected.
