About Bio Medical and Instrumentation Engineering

Bio Medical Instrumentation engineering is also called as Bioinstrumentation engineering. It is a branch of biomedical engineering only that focuses on the devices and mechanics used to measure, evaluate, and treat biological systems. This branch focuses on the use of multiple sensors to monitor physiological characteristics of a human or animal.

To constantly monitor the vital signs of Astronauts during NASA's Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions, these instrumentations become neccesary. This one is a new and an emerging branch of engineering that concentrates on treating diseases and bridging together the engineering and medical worlds.

Last 15 - 20 years have been incredible in this domain because they have seen enourmous growth in this sector. Lots of innovations have happened in the alst 2 decades. Bioinstrumentation has revolutionized the medical field, and has made treating patients much easier.

There are instruments used that find and convert the signals from our body into electrical signals. Some of the sub fields of this branch of engineering includes biomedical options, creation of sensor, genetic testing, and drug delivery. Even the branches like electrical engineering and computer science engineering are related to this branch of engineering. 

There has been massive growth related to bio medical instrumentation in the daily lives of the humans in various forms. For example, using sensor augmented smartphones can measure the heart rate and the oxygen levels of the humans. There are a lot of fitness related apps and devices that are connected together and work through the signals received from the human body. 

Even if this concept sounds new and the talk of this generation but Biomedical engineering was most developed in the nineteenth century. Bioinstrumentation was first developed in earnest by NASA during their early space missions, to gain a better understanding of how humans were affected by space travel. The inventions such as X-rays and stethoscopes have progressed and revolutionized the medical field.

Instrumentation engineers are commonly responsible for integrating the sensors with the recorders, transmitters, displays or control systems. In the simplest words, whatever instruments we have and use in our daily lives is because of instrumentation itself. The discipline of instrumentation engineering branched out of the streams of electrical and electronic engineering some time in the early part of 1970s.
