Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering focuses on biological sciences, chemical and biochemical engineering, microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry and genetics. Under this programme, students study about genetic technology, and learn how to develop treatments for different diseases. The programme also covers applied enzymology and enzyme technology, metabolic and reaction engineering for biocatalysis and renewable resource utilisation; and glycobiotechnology.
While pursuing the course, students are taught as to how the cells, organs and tissues function. Engineers are trained to transform cellular and molecular advances into technologies with an aim to improve the quality of life. It is a branch of applied biology and chemical engineering standards that includes the utilization of living things in technology, engineering, medicine, and various useful applications.
Biotechnology concentrates on living organisms and how they can be applied to medicine, technology, agriculture, and business. Bioengineering makes use of engineering principles to solve problems that arise in medicine as well as biology.
The Biochemical engineers are engaged in conducting studies on viruses, cells, proteins, or other biological substances to determine optimal conditions for growth or inhibitors that can stop or kill. The scope ofbioengineers and biomedical engineers is projected to grow by 6% from 2020 to 2030, about as fast as the average for all occupations. In the last 10 years, 1,400 openings for bioengineers and biomedical engineers have been projected each year on an average.
If a student is more interested in medicine, then Biomedical Engineering has to be the better choice, whereas if the student is more interested in biology and microbiology, biotechnology is the best option.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has predicted that in terms of job opportunities there will be a growth of at least 10 percent for biological technicians, biochemists, and biophysicists in the period between 2012 and 2022. There has also been an increase of seven percent in jobs for microbiologists.
Further, Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineers are playing a vital role in the development of medicines that do not have any side effect and can be effective in minimum dosages on patients. With an increase in the consumption of packaged food, biochemical engineer's role in the food processing industry has also gained importance.
JEE Main and JEE Advanced are the entrance exams needed to crack this course.
