About Civil and Structural Engineering

Civil and Structural Engineering is a specialization of the broad domain of Civil Engineering. It can be studied as a separate discipline as well. Civil and Structural Engineering deals with the analysis and design of structures. They include buildings, bridges, towers, flyovers, tunnels, offshore structures like oil and gas fields in the sea, aerostructure and other structures that support or resists the load.

Civil and structural engineers design buildings and non-building structures or machinery, equipment, vehicles etc. BE/B.Tech in Civil and Structural Engineering is a 4-year program. Structural engineers take into consideration the required strength and stability of structures. Structural engineering design utilizes a number of simple structural elements to build complex structural systems. One can pursue an M.Tech in Civil and Structural Engineering after BE/B.Tech.

The job profile of the civil and the structural engineers include planning of the designs, constructing and as well as maintenance. In structural engineering, the engineers mainly focus only on the structural aspects of a building or any man-made structures. Structural and civil engineering are not same. They are the two different disciplines of engineering which are related to each other.

The focus of structural engineering is mostly on the structural aspects of a building or any man-made structures. The main job of the structural engineers is to main job is to look after the strength of the structure of a particular thing. They are also concerned with the inspection of materials that will be used during the construction of a particular structure.

They stay along with the civil engineers but focus mostly on structural elements such as column, beams, girders, beam-column connection, shear wall, truss, rafter or support systems. In the simplest words, the civil engineers focus on the attention in design elements. The structural engineers focus on inspecting the materials to be used for the construction.

Civil and Structural Engineering Scope

  • Structural engineers primarily deal with the design of structures and calculate the loads and stresses of the structure to be built.
  • They also test the quality and strength delivered by a range of building materials and understand how to incorporate support beams, columns, and foundations.
  • Before work can begin, structural engineers are involved in the investigation and survey of build sites to determine the suitability of the earth for the requirements of the upcoming project.
  • They also coordinate and consult with other members of their projects, including engineers, environmental scientists, and architects.
  • The starting salaries of the structural engineers in India starts from somewhere around 4.8 LPA and increases with experience, expertise, and levels.

Civil and Structural Engineering Subjects

  • Aseismic Design of Structures
