UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is India's most prestigious competitive exam for recruitment to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and other Group A and B Central Services. The Preliminary examination is the first stage of the three-stage selection process.

Eligibility Criteria

Indian citizen with a bachelor's degree from a recognized university. Age: 21-32 years (relaxation for SC/ST: 5 years, OBC: 3 years). Maximum attempts: General (6), OBC (9), SC/ST (unlimited till age limit).

Exam Pattern

Prelims: Two papers (both objective MCQs). Paper 1 — General Studies (100 questions, 200 marks, 2 hours): History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Science, Environment, Current Affairs. Paper 2 — CSAT (80 questions, 200 marks, 2 hours): Comprehension, logical reasoning, analytical ability, basic numeracy, data interpretation. CSAT is qualifying (33% required). +2/−0.66 per question.
