IIT Bhubaneswar held a talk on critical role of electrical technology in global sustainability.
The program went on for a period of two days and was held at the state-of-the-art 1500-seater auditorium located on the premises of the institution, say sources from IIT Bhubaneswar.
The event was conducted at IIT Bhubaneswar as to mark Engineer’s Day celebrations.
Chairman of Board of Governors of IIT Bhubaneswar Dr. Rajendra Prasad Singh said the requirement and consumption of electrical energy has increased manifold in recent times, with significant impact on the sustainability at the global level.
In this context, innovative solutions like development of microgrids with high renewable integration is the need of the hour, he said.
He shared his insights on the crucial role of electrical energy in modern society.
BoG Chairman of IIT Bhubaneswar brilliantly showed how an electrical power system is analogous to human body, heart being the generator, arterial system the grid, blood pressure the voltage, heart rate the frequency, brain the control system and pace maker the battery.
Dr Singh also spoke about challenges posed by climate change, globalisation and growth of population.
All these factors impact the power consumption significantly. Various factors are contributing to the increase in power utilization, said Chairman of BoG of IIT Bhubaneswar.
Among them are depletion of coal and oil reserves, the challenges of alternative energy sources like hydropower and nuclear energy, and the rising costs of transmitting power from centralized generation systems.
Dr Singh also mentioned about the challenges that are coming in the way of transmitting the power to the remote areas and increasing concerns over system reliability.
Dr Singh said, in response to these issues, we can take up integration of renewable energy and localized energy systems, particularly through solar and wind power, as viable solutions.
These will lead to sustainable energy sources, reduced transmission costs, minimized system losses, and a more reliable power supply. Additionally, he underscored the potential of creating networked microgrids and virtual power plants (VPPs) to enhance energy management.
Dr. Singh, prior to the talk, also shared a presentation on Effective Leadership and urged the students to lead from the front with non-conventional decisions and a risk taking attitude.
Prof. Shreepad Karmalkar, Director of IIT Bhubaneswar, praised Dr. Singh for his talk on the role of electrical technology. The contents of the topic were conveyed in a way that were understood easily by all.
The success lies in taking the most complex information to non-specialist audience and making them understand easily, said Director of IIT Bhubaneswar. Dr Singh has show how this can be done very effectively, he said.
Director of IIT Bhubaneswar also spoke about how the institution is laying importance for communication skills.
He also mentioned about how the institution is taking steps towards developing the communication skills of its students and employees.
Each faculty is required to address 11th and 12th-grade students and their parents on a topic related to their specialization, said Director of IIT Bhubaneswar.
Apart from developing communication skill and deepening understanding in the faculty, this will also boost the Institute’s perception.

For students, courses are being run in the institute where the students get a chance to hone their communication skills for research and entrepreneurship, he said.
Prof. P. Dinakar, Dean (Sponsored Research & Industrial Consultancy) proposed a vote of thanks.
The campus provides a unique serene and pollution free academic environment. IIT Bhubaneswar has Academic area, Residential area and area for Training centres and Research Park.
Although IIT Bhubaneswar had started functioning from two transit campuses in the Bhubaneswar city during its inception period, majority of residential and academic activities have now started in the permanent campus at Argul.
