ARIIA Ranking: Great show during 2021

ARIIA Ranking for 2021 has been released and IIT Madras has put up a very impressive show. IIT Roorkee also witnessed significant improvement by four places as far as the ranking is concerned.
ARIIA Ranking of IIT Madras
It has been Ranked #1 in ARIIA launched by the Innovation Cell of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. IIT Madras is in the ‘CFTIs (Centrally Funded Technical Institutions)/Central University/Institute of National Importance (Technical)’ category.

This third edition of ARIIA Ranking has a special framework for non-technical institutions which will further strengthen the innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem in our education institutions.
The results
Dr. Subhas Sarkar, Minister of State for Education, Government of India, announced the ARIIA Ranking results on 29 December in the presence of Mr. Rakesh Ranjan, Additional Secretary (Technical Education), Ministry of Education, Government of India.

The other eminent personalities present during the launch of ARIIA Ranking results were Professor Anil D. Sahasrabudhe, Chairman, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Dr. M.P. Poonia, Vice Chairman, AICTE, Professor Rajive Kumar, Member Secretary, AICTE and Dr. Abhay Jere, Chief Innovation Officer, Innovation Cell, Ministry of Education, Government of India.

IIT Madras places a lot of emphasis on innovations among its students and faculty, which has resulted in a very successful and fast-growing deep technology startup ecosystem in the country, said Professor Bhaskar Ramamurthi.


The ARIIA Ranking will prepare our Higher Educational Institutions to position themselves in major international educational rankings and I would like to see ARIIA Ranking go global as innovation and entrepreneurship has become an integral part of education system across the globe, he said.
Speaking further Dr. Subhas Sarkar said innovation and entrepreneurship in the campuses should be linked to commercialisation and technology transfers.

More than quantity, the Institute should focus on the quality of innovations and research. This will help us to achieve the Atma Nirbhar Bharat in true sense, he said.
‘I appreciate the efforts of all the other Institutions and request them to continue following this path of innovation and entrepreneurship promotion so that all our educational institutions eventually emerge as hot beds of great, world-class ideas.

Ecosystem
IIT Madras has an ecosystem that encourages innovation and entrepreneurship at multiple levels. These include:
Ø Nirmaan, a pre-incubator to nurture student ideas mature towards incubation. Some of the startups that came from Nirmaan have been successfully incubated and raised over USD 1 Million
Ø IIT Madras Incubation Cell (IITMIC), India’s leading deep-tech startup incubator that has incubated more than 240 Startups that have a combined valuation of US$ 1.5 Billion and created more than 5,200 Jobs
Ø IIT Madras Research Park, which works with more than 75 R&D Clients, hosts Eight Centers of Excellence and Five Incubators besides engaging more than 3,000 professionals in its 1.2 million Sq.Ft of Workspace
Ø Gopalakrishnan Deshpande Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, which builds capacity in researchers to maximise the impact of deep-tech research through scalable start-ups

IIT Roorkee
Equally impressive was the performance of IIT Roorkee when it comes to ARIIA Ranking. The institution has been ranked No. 5. This is an improvement by four places for the institution when compared to the rank it got last year.
ARIIA Ranking results for 2021 were announced by Minister of State for Education Dr. Subhas Sarkar. Professor Rajat Agrawal, Associate Dean of Innovation and Incubation at IIT Roorkee spoke about ARIIA Ranking for IIT Roorkee.
This improvement in ARIIA Ranking shows that IIT Roorkee is moving in the right direction for making the Institute an innovation savvy campus.
He informed that 18 startups were established during the evaluation period. The filing of patents increased by 50% and four technologies were commercialized during the same period.
The filing of IP by startups in the incubation facility of the institute also increased by 100%. These improvements in different aspects of I&E helped IIT Roorkee improve 4 positions in this years’ ARIIA ranking.
IIT Roorkee director Professor Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi expressed satisfaction over the significant improvement in ARIIA ranking for 2021.
I am delighted that IIT Roorkee has broken into the top five ranks of a ranking by Ministry of Education. We were waiting for this moment. I am happy that it has come in ARIIA ranking.
Given the nature of these rankings, it shows that IIT Roorkee is offering a strong and conducive innovation platform for all of its stakeholders, said Professor Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi.
