IIT Kanpur develops great LiDAR based sprayer

IIT Kanpur has developed a first-of-its-kind LiDAR-based intelligent sprayer technology to revolutionize orchard farming.
The equipment was developed in collaboration with SimDaaS Autonomy Pvt. Ltd. (an IIT Kanpur-incubated startup) and industry partner AV Agritech.

Supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under the IDEAS TiH, ISI Kolkata project, the technology represents a significant leap forward in smart farming solutions, say sources from IIT Kanpur.
Day and night capability
The intelligent sprayer, with day & night capability, employs advanced LiDAR technology to scan trees ensuring precision in chemical application and optimizing resource utilization, say sources from IIT Kanpur.
The system is equipped with an integrated GPS-enabled mobile app that provides real-time updates on sprayed areas, agrochemical consumption, and device performance.

Farmers can monitor and control the device remotely, allowing for seamless management of operations, say sources from IIT Kanpur.
Additionally, its user-friendly design, featuring waterproof connectors and an easy plug-and-play setup, ensures a smooth adoption process for farmers.
The system also addresses common challenges faced by farmers, such as preventing speed overruns and lane skipping. Alerts generated by the system notify users of such issues, enhancing efficiency and reliability.

Paradigm shift
Professor Bharat Lohani said the LiDAR-based intelligent sprayer marks a paradigm shift in orchard farming.
It combines precision agriculture with cutting-edge technology, addressing the dual challenge of reducing agrochemical overuse and ensuring sustainable farming practices, he said.
This innovation empowers farmers with smarter tools while safeguarding the environment for future generations, he said.
‘Our vision is to create solutions that are not only effective but also accessible and practical for farmers across the country, integrating advanced technology into everyday farming.’

In the coming three months, four devices will be deployed across various orchards for further fine-tuning.
These trials aim to ensure the system’s adaptability to diverse crops and farming conditions, setting the stage for widespread adoption.
Practical aspects
One of the most practical aspects of this innovation is its adaptability, say sources from IIT Kanpur.
The intelligent LiDAR system can be seamlessly retrofitted into existing mechanical sprayers, transforming them into precision tools.
This approach ensures that farmers can adopt cutting-edge technology without the need for entirely new equipment, making it a scalable solution for diverse farming needs, say sources from IIT Kanpur.
With mass production expected in the coming months, the price is anticipated to drop further, making it accessible to farmers across the country and globally.
The technology is slated for commercial launch within 4–5 months, marking a significant milestone in making advanced agricultural tools widely available.
Commitment
This innovation underscores IIT Kanpur’s commitment to sustainable agricultural developments and intelligent use of technology in farming.
By reducing environmental impact and improving efficiency, the LiDAR-based intelligent sprayer is poised to transform orchard farming practices.
It will also be setting a new standard for precision agriculture in India, say sources from IIT Kanpur.
Professor Lohani was assisted by SimDaaS Autonomy and especially Akshat Arya in developing this technology.
