Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) is showcasing some of next generation technologies related to the aerospace, defence and security sectors in the Defence Expo 2020 which is being held in Lucknow from 5 to 9 February this year.

IIT-M is working on many projects, technologies related to the Defence industry. One of the its next generation technology that will be on the display in the exhibition is the ‘multi-role expendable UAVs.’ IIT-M is in the work of designing and developing an indigenous multi-role expendable UAVs which can be used for surveillance, logistics, monitoring of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons.

This project once finished will enhance the non-contact warfare capabilities of our armed forces.

The other technology to be put on display at the defence exposition is the ‘next generation fire control network.’ IIT-M has made a significant progress on indigenous processor ‘Shakti,’ based on which it is building the next generation Artillery Combat Command and Control Fire Network. Sakthi will be in a lightweight tablet configuration and is expected to be a precursor to secure net-centricity in the Armed Forces incorporating all new weapon systems.

Professor of Practice Lieutenant General (Retired) P.R. Shankar, Department of Aerospace Engineering, IIT Madras said they are on the verge of making a mark on the Defence industry through the technologies developed by their faculty and through our start-ups incubated in our one of its kind Research Parks.

We have come a long way since the last DefExpo held in Chennai, he said. Apart from showcasing its products, IIT-Madras will also be taking part in seminars during the exposition.

The prestigious educational institution also has plans to sign a Memorandum-of-Understanding (MoU) Ordnance Factory Board for the establishment of a joint Center of Excellence for Ammunition in emerging technologies in hypersonic/supersonic ballistics and their impact on the design of Ordnance and Ammunition and damage to platforms,materials.

It also has plans to sign an MoU with Bharat Electronics Limited for the establishment of research and collaboration in the areas of ‘Propellants, Explosives and Related Technologies.
