IIT Madras former dean gets great Life Time Contribution award

IIT Madras former dean Professor K.A. Padmanabhan has been selected for the Life Time Contribution Award in Engineering 2020 by Indian National Academyof Engineering (INAE).
IIT Madras former dean was selected for the award keeping in view his contributions towards the development of engineering in India.


It is interesting to note that INAE which is going to present the award to IIT Madras former dean functions as an apex body and promotes the practice of engineering and technology and the related sciences for their application to solve problems of national importance.
IIT Madras former dean Professor Padmanabhan held his position as a dean at IIT Madras from 96 to 97. He later on took over as Director of IIT Kanpur from 1997 to 2001.
Professor Padmanabhan, the IIT Madras former dean has over 48 years of experience in researchand development, consulting and teaching in materials science and engineering.

IIT Madras former dean is currently Professor of Eminence (Honorary) at Anna University. He is also a member of Research and Innovation Advisory Board (RAB) of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) as well as its research advisor.
The tenure of Professor Padmabhan at IIT Madras is marked with commendable achievements.
IIT Madras former dean is credited for establishing the Centre for Continuing Education at IIT Madras and was its founder-chairman during 1986-90.

In 1984/85 he received a grant of DM 3.2 million from the Federal Ministry of International Cooperation (BMZ), Germany, through its implementing agency, GTZ (Agency for Technical Cooperation), for the establishment of an Indo-German Materials Testing Facility at IIT Madras.
That’s not all. IIT Madras former dean was also the founder chairman of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), which is the qualifying test for admissions with scholarship to higher technical educational institutions in India on behalf of Ministry of Education, Government of India for the first and second GATE examinations of 1983 and 1984.


Professor Padmanabhan holds positions in numerous prestigious organizations.
He is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, Indian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences-India, Institute of Materials Minerals and Mining (London), Indian Academy for Mathematical Modelling and Simulation, Life Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India) and the Indian Institute of Metals, Consulting Fellow of the World Innovation Foundation (London), among other such organizations.
IIT Madras former dean began his formal career in April 1972 at the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (now IIT Varanasi) where he was a Lecturer (1972-74) and Reader (1974-79).
In January 1980 he joined IIT Madras as the Professor and Head of Metal Forming Laboratory.
During 1982 – 85, he served as the Head of the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at IIT Madras.
IIT Madras former dean obtained his BSc (Metallurgy) – a five-year integrated degree program in Metallurgical Engineering – from Banaras Hindu University (India) in 1968, securing the first rank in the university and (all possible) three Gold Medals and his PhD from the University of Cambridge, U.K, in February 1972.
Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) was established in 1959 by the Government of India as an ‘Institute of National Importance.’
The activities of the Institute in various fields of Science and Technology are carried out in 16 academic departments and several advanced interdisciplinary research academic centres.

It was also adjudged as the ‘Top innovative Institution’ in the country in Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) in 2019 and 2020. ARIIA Ranking was launched by the Innovation Cell of Ministry of Education.
