Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) was established in 2001 at Safdarjung Hospital by the Government of India. On 17th December 2001, it was inaugurated by then Honourable Prime Minister Sh. Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the presence of Sh. L.K Advani, Sh. C.P Thakur and founder Principal Dr Jagdish Prasad. The college is affiliated to Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University. The first MBBS batch started in 2002. Post-graduate courses (MD/MS) in clinical subjects were running at Safdarjung Hospital before the establishment of VMMC. The college is also running super specialization (Mch/DM).
