At PG level you choose a branch and a college together, across several counsellings that run side by side. A good rank is lost to the wrong order of choices, a missed deadline, or a seat accepted in one round that rules out a better one in the next.
The Medical Counselling Committee allots 50% of MD, MS, Diploma and PG DNB seats in government colleges as All India Quota, and all the seats in central universities and deemed universities, along with AFMS and DNB seats.
Each state runs its own counselling for the rest of its government seats and for its private colleges, with its own domicile and in-service rules, rounds and deadlines.
Fees, stipends, service bonds and security deposits differ widely between colleges and between AIQ, state, deemed and DNB seats. What you accept in Round 1 decides what you can do in Round 2.
