One NEET rank opens several separate counsellings, each with its own registration, rounds and rules. Students lose good seats by registering for the wrong ones, filling choices in the wrong order or accepting a seat that blocks a better one later.
The Medical Counselling Committee allots the 15% All India Quota seats in government colleges, and the seats in deemed universities, central universities, AIIMS and JIPMER.
Each state runs its own counselling for the rest of its government seats and for its private colleges, with its own domicile rules, rounds and deadlines.
Fees, bonds and security deposits differ a lot between colleges. A seat you accept in one round can decide what you are allowed to do in the next.
