Doctor of Medicine
Doctor of Medicine (MD) is a three-year postgraduate medical degree pursued after MBBS, regulated by the National Medical Commission (NMC), that trains doctors in a specific clinical, para-clinical or pre-clinical specialty such as general medicine, pathology, pharmacology or dermatology. The programme combines departmental postings and clinical or laboratory work, seminars and case discussions, teaching of junior students, and a mandatory thesis based on original research in the chosen specialty. Admission is through NEET-PG, conducted by the National Board of Examinations, with INI-CET as the route into AIIMS, JIPMER, PGIMER and other Institutes of National Importance; seats are allotted through central and state counselling based on rank and category. MD suits MBBS graduates who want to specialise, practise as a specialist, or move into teaching and research in a medical college.
