About This Scholarship
Kanyashree Prakalpa is a conditional cash transfer scheme of the Department of Women and Child Development and Social Welfare, Government of West Bengal. It aims to keep girls in education and to delay their marriage until at least 18, the legal age of marriage. Benefits are paid directly into a bank account in the girl's own name. The scheme has two components on the Kanyashree portal: K1, an annual incentive for unmarried girls aged 13 to 18 who are in Class VIII or above (or an equivalent vocational, technical or sports course), and K2, a one-time grant paid after a girl turns 18 if she is unmarried and still in academic or occupational pursuits. K3 is the postgraduate scholarship for girls who received K2; it is applied for on the SVMCM portal of the Department of Higher Education.
The scheme is open to girls from families with an annual income of Rs 1,20,000 or less, and the income test is waived for girls with special needs, orphans and girls in Juvenile Justice Homes. The Kanyashree guidelines on the portal, published on 16 May 2016, route the application through the educational institution, which enters it on the portal; the portal then issues a Kanyashree ID, and sanction and payment follow by direct bank transfer. The portal's Notice Board lists no notice for 2026-27, so no application dates are announced. Amounts below follow the portal's Conditional Cash Transfer page; the 2016 guidelines still show K1 as Rs 750.

How to Apply
Application Guide
- K1 and K2: ask the educational institution (school, madrasah, college or training centre) for the application form. The 2016 guidelines describe pre-printed forms, light green for K1 and light blue for K2; moving from K1 to K2 uses a form generated on the portal.
- Fill the form and hand it with the certificates to the designated person at the institution: birth certificate, declaration by parent or guardian on marital status, enrolment certificate from the Head of Institution, and the income declaration or employer's income certificate (not needed where the income test is waived).
- Take the acknowledgement receipt carrying the Application Form number. The institution enters the application on the Kanyashree portal with the scanned bank details.
- After upload the portal creates a Kanyashree ID and an identity card. The status can be followed under Track Application on https://kanyashree.wb.gov.in.
- K3: apply on https://svmcm.wb.gov.in under Kanyashree (K3), after the K2 authentication with the K2 year of application, Kanyashree ID, name, date of birth and father's and mother's names. Girls without a K2 ID apply under the Directorate of Public Instruction category with the same criteria and benefits.
Selection Process
K1 and K2 are not competitive: the guidelines say all girls resident in West Bengal who study in the listed institutions and meet the criteria must be allowed to apply, including girls who receive scholarships from other sources. Applications uploaded by institutions become visible for scrutiny to the officer or unit with the right authorisation, and sanction and payment follow by direct bank transfer, with no paper forms moving between offices. Field verification of at least 5 percent of cases is to be done at each level. K3 is sanctioned through the SVMCM portal in merit order as funds allow.
