About Smt. NHL Municipal Medical College
Smt. NHL Municipal Medical College stands at Ellisbridge in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation founded it in 1963, making the corporation the second in India, after Mumbai, to start its own medical college; Morarji Desai, then Union Finance Minister, inaugurated it on 15 June 1963. The first batch had 75 MBBS students and the intake was 100 from 1964. The college is managed by the AMC Medical Education Trust, is affiliated to Gujarat University and is recognised by the Medical Council of India, now the National Medical Commission. Clinical teaching takes place at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Medical Science and Research hospital on the campus, Smt. S.C.L. General Hospital and Shri C.H. Nagri Eye Hospital, which together have more than 2,200 teaching beds.
The college lists 33 departments across pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical groups, from anatomy and physiology to cardiology, nephrology, neurosurgery and rheumatology. Its sanctioned MBBS intake is 250 seats. The 2023 postgraduate list shows 20 MD and MS courses with 251 seats and eight DM and M.Ch. super-speciality courses with 19 seats, and a one-year medical laboratory technician certificate course also runs. MBBS seats are filled on NEET (UG) scores through Gujarat's admission committee, with a separate local quota, and the first-year MBBS 2026 batch was scheduled to start on 24 September 2026. The library holds about 24,000 books and takes more than 100 journals.
