How admission is decided
Two merit lists are prepared for each programme, one on GATE/GPAT score and one on HD test marks. At most 50% of the seats go through GATE/GPAT and the rest through HD test marks; a seat left empty in one list moves to the other. In 2026-27, candidates admitted through the HD test were eligible for a stipend of Rs 13,400 per month during the semester, and GATE/GPAT admits for a tuition fee waiver of the same amount on top of the AICTE or PCI scholarship; both groups contribute 8 to 10 hours of teaching assistance a week. The M.E. Advanced Electronic Systems and Smart Manufacturing programme adds a mandatory industry-panel interview (30% weight, with 70% for the test or GATE score).

- Holders of an integrated first degree of BITS or its equivalent may qualify for any M.E. programme after completing additional courses, and the programme may then run longer than four semesters.
- A candidate who picks a programme preference without meeting its eligibility is excluded from admission and, if the HD test was chosen as the mode, disqualified from the test.
- The M.E. Advanced Electronic Systems and Smart Manufacturing programme needs a mandatory interview in addition to the test or GATE score.

Exam Pattern
The BITS HD test is a computer-based test with objective questions. Test I is compulsory for all HD test candidates; Test II depends on the programme. The marks column is calculated from 3 marks per question.
| Paper | Taken by | Questions | Duration | Maximum marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Test I: Core Mathematics (15) and English Language Skills and Logical Reasoning (15) | All HD test candidates | 30 | 45 minutes | 90 |
| Test II: subjects of the applicant's discipline | All candidates except M.E. Environmental Engineering and Software Systems | 70 | 105 minutes | 210 |
| Special test in Environmental Engineering | M.E. Environmental Engineering | 50 | 60 minutes | 150 |
| Special test in Software Systems | M.E. Software Systems | 50 | 60 minutes | 150 |
- Each question has four options and one correct answer; 3 marks for a correct answer, 1 mark deducted for a wrong one, nothing for an unattempted question.
- Questions and instructions are in English only.
- Each candidate gets a different question set drawn at random from a large bank; an expert committee keeps the sets comparable in difficulty.
- The computer shows the candidate's score at the end of the test. A hall ticket is needed to enter the centre; mobile phones and other smart gadgets are not allowed, while a calculator with no network or programming feature is.
- Centres are monitored by web cameras or CCTV, and rule violations lead to disqualification.
