GSVM Medical College

GSVM Medical College, formally the Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial Medical College, is a government medical college at Swaroop Nagar, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, near Gol Chauraha and Hallet Hospital. It is named after the freedom fighter and journalist Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi (1890-1931). The college came into existence in November 1955 and describes itself as the first medical college of Uttar Pradesh set up after Independence. Its foundation stone was laid on 24 April 1956 and it was inaugurated on 13 December 1959. Initially affiliated to Lucknow University, it moved to Kanpur University (now Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University) in 1968 and has been affiliated to Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University, Lucknow, since 2021.

The MBBS course lasts four years and six months, followed by a compulsory one-year internship, and the intake is 250 seats a year: 85 per cent state-quota seats filled through NEET UG and Uttar Pradesh counselling, and 15 per cent all-India quota. Postgraduate teaching covers MD and MS degrees in 19 departments, including General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics and Anaesthesia, along with DM and MCh super-speciality courses in Cardiology, Neurology, Neurosurgery and Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, as listed by the university. The college also offers one- to two-year paramedical diplomas under the State Medical Faculty, Lucknow, and lists nursing programmes on its courses page.
