Harcourt Butler Technical University

Harcourt Butler Technical University (HBTU) is a state technical university in Kanpur. It grew from the Government Research Institute, Cawnpore, set up in 1920, and took the name Harcourt Butler Technological Institute (HBTI) in 1926. Uttar Pradesh Act No. 11 of 2016 turned the institute into a university from 1 September 2016. The university works on two campuses about 3 km apart, the East Campus (77 acres) and the West Campus (251.8 acres). NAAC accredited it at grade A+ (CGPA 3.29) in its first cycle in 2023, valid until 9 June 2028. In NIRF 2025 it is in the engineering rank band 201-300 and the state public university band 51-100.

Teaching is organised in schools of engineering, chemical technology, basic and applied sciences, humanities and social sciences, entrepreneurship and management, and pharmaceutical and biological sciences. The university offers B.Tech in thirteen disciplines, including civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics, computer science, information technology and several chemical technology branches, plus B.Tech biotechnology, B.Pharm, BBA and BS-MS in mathematics and data science. Postgraduate programmes are M.Tech in eleven specialisations, MCA, MBA and M.Sc. in physics, chemistry and mathematics, with Ph.D. in all departments. Its NIRF 2025 engineering submission reports 912 sanctioned UG places for 2023-24, and 638 of 729 B.Tech graduates placed in 2023-24 at a median salary of Rs 6,50,000. Admissions for 2026-27 run through the university's online portal; M.Tech and MCA seats go by GATE, and MBA by CAT or MAT with an interview.
