About Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith
Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith is a state university in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It was founded on 10 February 1921 as Kashi Vidyapith during the non-cooperation movement and was renamed Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith in 1995. The UGC gave it deemed university status in 1963, and it became a statutory state university on 15 January 1974, governed by the Uttar Pradesh State Universities Act, 1973. The main campus is on Station Road, Maldahiya, Chetganj, Varanasi, with further campuses at Gangapur and NTPC. The university affiliates more than 350 colleges across five districts: Varanasi, Chandauli, Bhadohi, Mirzapur and Sonbhadra. Its most recent NAAC grade on record, C in the third cycle (2018), was valid from 2 November 2018 to 1 November 2023.
The university has nine faculties: Agriculture, Commerce and Management Studies, Education, Humanities, Law, Medical Sciences, Social Sciences, Social Work, and Science and Technology. The University Campus teaches undergraduate programmes such as B.A., B.Com., B.Sc., B.F.A., B.C.A., B.B.A., B.Ed. and LL.B., more than 40 postgraduate programmes from M.A. and M.Sc. to LL.M., M.B.A. and M.C.A., and 44 Ph.D. programmes. Postgraduate seats are filled on merit from qualifying-examination marks, and professional programmes through an entrance examination held by the university, with online registration on the Samarth portal and counselling. In its NIRF 2025 data submission the university reported 8,910 students and a 2023-24 sanctioned intake of 2,290 three-year UG places and 2,549 two-year PG places.
