University of Allahabad

The University of Allahabad, in Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad), Uttar Pradesh, was founded on 23 September 1887 under Act XVIII of that year and is described by the university as the fourth oldest university in India after Calcutta, Bombay and Madras. It grew out of the Muir Central College (foundation stone laid 1873), whose separate existence ended with the University of Allahabad Act of 1921. The University of Allahabad Act, 2005 (Act No. 26 of 2005) declared it an institution of national importance, and it now functions as a central university with the President of India as Visitor. The main campus is Senate House Campus, University Road, Old Katra. The university states that it is NAAC A+ accredited, and NIRF 2025 placed it in the 101-150 rank band for engineering and the 101-125 band for management.

Teaching is organised into the Faculties of Arts, Commerce, Law and Science, with independent centres and the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies, and the programme list runs from Ancient History, Sanskrit and Philosophy to Physics, Statistics, Electronics and Computer Science. The university says its undergraduate programmes run under the four-year framework of NEP 2020; offerings include B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., BFA, BPA, BCA, B.Voc., B.A. LL.B. (Hons) and five-year integrated programmes, and for 2026-27 admission was only through CUET (UG) 2026 followed by university counselling. Postgraduate admission uses the university's own Postgraduate Admission Test (PGAT-I and PGAT-II), and MBA applicants also take a departmental test. Professional courses such as MCA and M.Sc. Food Technology run under the Institute of Professional Studies, which notifies separate course fees.
