About University of North Bengal

The University of North Bengal (NBU) is a state university set up by an Act of the West Bengal Legislature in 1962 to provide instruction, training and research for the North Bengal region. Its main campus at Raja Rammohunpur in Darjeeling district covers nearly 316 acres in the foothills of the Himalaya, and the university has acquired 31.5 acres at Jalpaiguri, beside Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College, for a second campus. NAAC accredited the university with Grade B++ (CGPA 2.82 on a seven-point scale) on 14 June 2022, valid for five years. India Rankings 2025 of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) placed it in the 51-100 band of the State Public Universities category.

Teaching is organised in departments and centres that report to two faculty councils for postgraduate studies, one for Science and one for Arts, Commerce and Law, alongside a Council for Undergraduate Studies. The programme list covers M.A., M.Sc., M.Com., MCA, M.Tech in Computer Science and Technology, M.Pharm, MBA, LL.M. and M.Lib.I.Sc. degrees, undergraduate courses such as B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) and B.Lib.I.Sc., and Ph.D. research. Research units include the Centre for Himalayan Studies, the Fisheries Research and Training Centre, the High Energy and Cosmic Ray Research Centre and an IUCAA centre for astronomy research.
