Overview

SSC CHSL is the Staff Selection Commission exam for Class 12 level LDC/JSA and DEO posts; Tier-I of CHSL 2026 is proposed for 30 Nov-31 Dec 2026. The Combined Higher Secondary (10+2) Level Examination fills Group C posts of Lower Divisional Clerk/Junior Secretariat Assistant (LDC/JSA) and Data Entry Operator (DEO) in Ministries, Departments and Offices of the Government of India. The notice inviting applications for CHSL 2026 was not on SSC's notice board by 5 October 2026, so the eligibility and pattern below are from the CHSL 2025 notice of 23 June 2025, which carried 3,131 tentative vacancies (as on 5 August 2025).

Selection and vacancies

Selection has two tiers, and candidates shortlisted from Tier-I appear in Tier-II. The merit list is prepared on Tier-II performance only, using the aggregate marks in Sections I and II; the computer knowledge test and the skill or typing test are qualifying. SSC places tentative answer keys on its website after each examination and accepts online representations at Rs 100 per question, which is non-refundable. Marks from examinations held in several shifts are normalised, and there is no re-evaluation or re-checking. SSC's 2026 calendar had listed July to September 2026 for Tier-I, and the 1 October 2026 notice proposes 30 November to 31 December 2026. SSC does not collect state-wise or zone-wise vacancies for CHSL; its vacancy notice asks candidates to contact the user departments for them.

  • Negative marking: 0.50 mark per wrong answer in Tier-I; 1 mark per wrong answer in Sections I, II and III of Tier-II.
  • Sections III and IV are qualifying; the merit list uses Tier-II marks in Sections I and II only.
  • Skill test: 15,000 key depressions per hour for DEO/DEO Grade 'A' in the departments named in para 8.1, and 8,000 per hour for other DEOs. Typing test: 35 words per minute in English or 30 in Hindi.

Syllabus

Tier-I: English Language

  • Spot the error, fill in the blanks, synonyms/homonyms, antonyms, spellings, idioms and phrases, one word substitution.
  • Improvement of sentences, active/passive voice, direct/indirect narration, shuffling of sentence parts and sentences, cloze passage, comprehension passage.

Tier-I: General Intelligence

  • Verbal and non-verbal questions: semantic and figural analogy, classification and series, symbolic operations, Venn diagrams, drawing inferences, space orientation, pattern folding and unfolding, embedded figures, coding and decoding, number series, word building, critical thinking, problem solving.

Tier-I: Quantitative Aptitude

  • Number systems; percentages, ratio and proportion, averages, interest, profit and loss, discount, partnership, mixture and alligation, time and distance, time and work.
  • Algebra, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry and statistical charts.

Tier-I: General Awareness

  • Current events and everyday science; India and its neighbours: history, culture, geography, economic scene, general policy and scientific research.

Tier-II

  • Mathematical Abilities: the Quantitative Aptitude topics above plus statistics and probability.
  • Reasoning and General Intelligence; English Language and Comprehension (vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, comprehension); General Awareness.
  • Computer Knowledge: computer basics, software (Windows, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint), internet and e-mail, basics of networking and cyber security.

How to Apply for SSC CHSL 2026

  1. Apply online only, at ssc.gov.in or in the mySSC mobile app. Candidates without a One-Time Registration (OTR) on the new SSC website must complete it first.
  2. Fill in the Online Application Form, choosing the language for Parts II to IV of Tier-I and the medium (English or Hindi) of the typing test; the typing-test choice is final.
  3. Capture the live photograph when prompted and upload the scanned signature as a JPEG of 10 to 20 KB.
  4. Pay the fee online (BHIM UPI, net banking, Visa, MasterCard, Maestro or RuPay debit card) before the fee deadline.
  5. Use the correction window if needed: Rs 200 for the first correction and Rs 500 for the second, for all candidates.
