Nallamuthu Gounder Mahalingam College

Nallamuthu Gounder Mahalingam College (NGM College) is an autonomous arts, science and commerce college on Palghat Road in Pollachi, Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu. Pollachi Kalvi Kazhagam, led by S.P. Nallamuthu Gounder with Dr. N. Mahalingam as secretary, opened it on 12 July 1957 with 160 students in the Pre-University Course on a 26-acre campus. It became a degree college in July 1959, introduced co-education in 1975 and began postgraduate teaching in 1979. The UGC conferred autonomy in 1987 and recognised the college under sections 2(f) and 12(B) in December 2018. It is affiliated to Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. NAAC accredited it at A++ (CGPA 3.51) in its fourth cycle, after a visit on 29-30 August 2024; the grade was declared on 9 November 2024. Earlier cycles gave an A in March 2007 and a B (CGPA 2.45) in July 2019. NIRF 2025 placed the college in the 101-150 band of the College category.

The college describes about 60 programmes across UG, PG and research, plus five certificate courses, with 262 staff and 5,416 students. Government-aided programmes include B.A. History, English Literature and Economics; B.Sc. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Computer Science; B.Com.; M.Sc. Mathematics and Physics; and M.Com. Self-financing programmes cover B.A. Tamil, B.Sc. Computer Technology and two Computer Science variants (data analytics; artificial intelligence and machine learning), B.C.A., B.B.A., B.S.W., more B.Com. variants, M.A. Tamil and English, M.S.W., M.Sc. Chemistry, Botany and Computer Science, and two PG diplomas. Admission is on merit under Government rules and Bharathiar University eligibility conditions, with an interview for provisionally selected applicants.
