About National Law University and Judicial Academy, Guwahati
National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam is a state law university in Guwahati, set up by the Government of Assam under the National Law School and Judicial Academy, Assam Act, 2009 (Act No. XXV of 2009); a later amendment replaced the word 'School' with 'University'. It was the first national law university in India's North Eastern Region and began functioning in September 2011. The 50-acre campus at Amingaon, on the north bank of the Brahmaputra, also houses the Judicial Academy, Assam. The Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court is its Chancellor.
NLUJA Assam offers the B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) five-year integrated course, a one-year LL.M. and a Ph.D. programme. B.A., LL.B. and LL.M. seats are filled on CLAT scores, with the university running further rounds for vacant seats. It is recognised by the Bar Council of India and under Section 12-B of the UGC Act, and NAAC accredited it with a B++ grade (CGPA 2.76) after its first-cycle visit in November 2024. In NIRF 2025 it is ranked 35th in law.
