The Polytechnic Entrance Competitive Examination (PECE) is conducted by the Jharkhand Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (JCECEB), Ranchi, for first-semester or first-year admission to diploma engineering courses. How scores are used
The Board prepares a merit list from PECE marks and candidates are admitted through merit-cum-choice interviews; the prospectus lists a first and a second interview round. The state reservation policy applies, including ex-servicemen and disability quotas, 50% of the seats at Al-Kabir Polytechnic, Mango, Jamshedpur for the Muslim community, and a free-education scheme with 5% extra seats for families earning below Rs 8 lakh a year.

Eligibility Criteria
The 2026 prospectus, application portal and notice set these criteria for diploma engineering admission.

- A local-resident certificate from the circle officer, sub-divisional officer (civil) or deputy commissioner must be shown in original at the interview; the state defines a local resident in its notification of 18 April 2016.
- Caste-based reservation follows the state's latest policy. SC, ST, BC-I and BC-II candidates need certificates in the prescribed form, and BC-I and BC-II candidates need a creamy-layer certificate.
- Seats are also reserved for ex-servicemen and their dependants and for persons with disabilities of 40% or more.
- Admission is through interviews after the merit list is published, and certificates must be shown in original.

- Mode and duration: OMR-based (offline), 2 hours 30 minutes; in 2026 the exam ran from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm.
- Marking: 1 mark for each correct answer and 0.25 mark deducted for each wrong answer. Marking more than one option for a question makes the answer invalid and it is counted as wrong.
- Centres: eight district headquarters (Ranchi, Hazaribagh, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Dumka, Chaibasa, Bokaro and Palamu); the Board may reduce the number of centres for unavoidable reasons.
- Merit list: prepared from PECE marks; the prospectus also provides for re-evaluation and re-totalling.
- Answer keys: the Board publishes a provisional answer key and then a final answer key; both appeared for the 12 July 2026 exam.
- Applications: online only, with photograph, signature and left thumb impression uploaded in JPG or JPEG format.
