Overview

INI-SS is the AIIMS entrance test for DM/M.Ch. courses at AIIMS, PGIMER, NIMHANS, JIPMER and SCTIMST. The January 2027 session test is on 24 October 2026; registration closes on 9 October 2026 (5:00 PM). The Examination Section of AIIMS New Delhi conducts the Institute of National Importance Super Speciality entrance test for the 3-year DM/M.Ch. courses, with a January and a July session. The January 2027 prospectus lists 23 institutes: 19 AIIMS (New Delhi and 18 others), JIPMER Puducherry, NIMHANS Bengaluru, PGIMER Chandigarh and SCTIMST Thiruvananthapuram. No seats are reserved for OBC, SC, ST or EWS candidates; all seats are advertised as General, Sponsored or Foreign National seats. The process runs in three phases: application, declaration of result, and seat allocation. Results, corrigenda, addenda and other updates are published only on the AIIMS exam website, so applicants need to check it regularly.

Seat position and updates

Seat position is given in Annexure I of the prospectus and can change at any stage. Corrigendum No. 39/2026 (25 September 2026) revised seats at AIIMS Kalyani, AIIMS Gorakhpur, AIIMS Raipur and JIPMER and added MD in Emergency Medicine as an eligible qualification for DM Critical Care Medicine. Addendum No. 42/2026 (29 September 2026) raised seats for DM Medical Oncology at PGIMER and for DM Neuroimaging and Interventional Neuroradiology at AIIMS New Delhi, and revised the tie-break rule (fewer negative marks first, then the older candidate).

  • Stage-II (AIIMS and PGIMER only): 20-mark departmental assessment by video conference, about 8 to 10 minutes per candidate: 10 marks for a clinical or laboratory scenario, 5 marks for spotting, 5 marks for viva.
  • Stage-II is open to candidates with at least 50% in Stage-I who applied for AIIMS or PGIMER seats; 3 times the AIIMS/PGIMER seats in the category, or 2 times all seats in the category, whichever is higher, are called. To qualify for AIIMS and PGIMER seats, a candidate needs 50% or more in Stage-I and Stage-II combined (100 marks).
  • Merit lists: the Common Merit List (Stage-I marks) is used for all institutes except AIIMS and PGIMER; the AIIMS Merit List (Stage-I plus Stage-II) is used for AIIMS and PGIMER.
  • Ties: fewer negative marks first, then the older date of birth (revised by Addendum No. 42/2026).

How to Apply for INI-SS January 2027 Session

  1. Open the AIIMS exam portal, go to Academic Courses and then INI-SS, and create an account or log in to apply.
  2. Fill in the online application, including course and institute choices. Name, date of birth, subject applied for, community (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/UR) and PwBD status cannot be changed after the fee is paid.
  3. Upload the photograph, signature and left thumb impression; an invalid upload cannot be corrected later. Upload category certificates by 9 October 2026 (OBC-NCL certificates valid for 2026-27), the sponsorship certificate for sponsored seats, or the OCI card for OCI candidates.
  4. Pay the fee online by debit card, credit card, net banking or UPI. Applications without the fee are rejected.
  5. After the window closes, check the application status from 15 October 2026 and the admit card from 20 October 2026. Queries go through the Raise a query link on My Page.
