Overview
The MITID Design Aptitude Test (MITID DAT, also written MIT DAT) is the entrance test of MIT Institute of Design, the design institute of MIT ADT University, Pune. It is the first phase of admission to the four-year B.Des and B.Des Fashion programmes; shortlisted candidates then take a studio test and personal interview on the Pune campus. For the 2027 intake the official pages give the last date of application as 28 February 2027, the test date as 4 April 2027 and the result date as 22 April 2027, all marked tentative. M.Des applicants are shortlisted on a portfolio and statement of purpose instead.

Eligibility Criteria
The MIT ID admission page sets one rule for the two undergraduate programmes and a degree-based rule for each M.Des specialisation. Candidates appearing in Class 12 may apply; admission is confirmed only after they pass.

Application forms that are incomplete or do not meet the eligibility rule are rejected and the DAT fee is not refunded. Selection extends beyond marks: the admission committee looks for evidence of perception, attitude, aptitude, achievement and motivation.

Exam Pattern
MIT ID has not published a 2027 paper pattern, marks or duration. The latest papers it posts are the B.Des sample papers of the 16 April 2022 and 2 April 2023 tests. Both have a single Part A with three sections and 29 questions. The 2025 test ran from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, and for 2027 the DAT site says the time slot is yet to be finalised.

Candidates carry drawing, cutting and pasting and colouring material such as colour pencils, crayons, stapler, scissors and glue stick. Marks per section, negative marking and the mode of the 2027 paper are not stated on the official pages.

Syllabus
MIT ID publishes no syllabus for the DAT. Its guidelines page lists the abilities the test and interview look for, and the sample papers show how they are tested.
- Analysis and observation: analysing a situation, identifying its elements, keen perception and finding patterns and relationships.
- Synthesis and problem solving: interpreting, planning and developing strategies for a given problem.
- Learning and awareness: learning to learn, curiosity and awareness of the world.
- Communication: verbal and non-verbal communication, including drawing and sketching.
- Making: handling different materials and media, neatness, precision and quality of work.

How to Apply for MITID DAT 2027
Applications are online only, on the MITID DAT portal. The 2027 pages describe these steps.
- Register at dat.net.in with an email id and mobile number and verify them with the link or OTP.
- Pay the fee online: Rs 3,000 for Indian applicants and Rs 4,500 for NRI, PIO, OCI and foreign nationals, by net banking, credit card or debit card.
- Fill in the application form, upload a passport-size photograph and the documents for the category: 10th mark sheet, 12th mark sheet (not required from candidates appearing in Class 12), caste or EWS certificate, domicile certificate and non-creamy-layer certificate where they apply, and the graduation mark sheet for M.Des.
- Accept the declaration and submit. After scrutiny the admit card is generated by the fourth week of March and can be downloaded from the candidate's profile on the portal.
- Appear for the DAT on 4 April 2027 (tentative). Shortlisted B.Des candidates are announced on the MIT ID website; no separate call letters are sent.
M.Des applicants upload a portfolio (under 5 MB) and a statement of purpose of about 800 to 1,000 words (under 2 MB) with the application, on or before 15 April 2027.

MITID DAT Studio Test, Interview and Final List
The DAT shortlists candidates; it does not decide admission on its own. The MIT ID page describes two phases for B.Des and B.Des Fashion.
- Phase 1, MITID DAT: based on the scores, shortlisted candidates are called for the second phase. The shortlist is published on the MIT ID website and no separate call letters are sent.
- Phase 2, studio test and personal interview: held on the Pune campus. Candidates bring their ID proof, hall ticket, a copy of the DAT result, their portfolio and work samples, and drawing and painting material.
- Final list: the admission committee decides the procedures, grades and weightage every year, and its decision is final.
Seats and reservation
- Intake: B.Des 400, B.Des Fashion 50, M.Des 165, MBA Innovation and Entrepreneurship 30 seats. NRI, PIO, OCI and international intake is up to 10% above the regular intake.
- Category-wise reservation applies to Maharashtra candidates only, up to 50% social reservation plus 10% for EWS; EWS reservation applies to all. Five percent of Maharashtra seats per course are reserved for children of defence personnel. Other candidates compete in the general open category.
- The 2026-27 first-year B.Des fee on the MIT ADT fee page is Rs 4,75,000 for Indian residents; the EWS row is Rs 2,55,000.
