How the TNEA cutoff is worked out
Cutoff = Mathematics + Physics ÷ 2 + Chemistry ÷ 2, each out of 100, so the cutoff is out of 200. Maths 95, Physics 90 and Chemistry 88 make 95 + 45 + 44 = 184.
Seats are shared between communities under Tamil Nadu's rule of reservation. Everyone can take OC seats; reserved communities also take their own, and SCA candidates also take SC seats.
| Open Competition (OC) | 31% |
| Backward Class (BC) | 26.5% |
| Backward Class Muslim (BCM) | 3.5% |
| Most Backward Class and Denotified (MBC/DNC) | 20% |
| Scheduled Caste (SC) | 15% |
| Scheduled Caste Arunthathiyar (SCA) | 3% |
| Scheduled Tribe (ST) | 1% |
On top of this, 7.5% of seats go to students who studied Class 6 to 12 in Tamil Nadu government schools, whose tuition, hostel and development fees the government pays.
TNEA cutoff by branch
Every college's closing marks for one branch, by community. (SS) seats are self-supporting, with higher fees.

TNEA cutoff: questions students ask
How is the TNEA cutoff calculated?
The TNEA cutoff is out of 200: your Class 12 Mathematics mark (out of 100) plus half of Physics plus half of Chemistry. For example, Maths 95, Physics 90 and Chemistry 88 make 95 + 45 + 44 = 184.
What was the TNEA 2026 cutoff for CSE at the top colleges?
For Open Competition (OC) seats, Computer Science and Engineering closed at College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG), Anna University (200), Madras Institute of Technology (MIT), Anna University (197.667), Thiagarajar College of Engineering (196.5) in TNEA 2026. Every college's figures by community are on the CSE cutoff page.
What rank will I get with a cutoff of 190 or 180?
In the TNEA 2026 rank list of 2,33,812 academic candidates, the last candidate at a cutoff of 190 was ranked 6,627, at 180 ranked 21,278, and at 170 ranked 41,332. Your rank next year depends on how everyone else scores.
Which seats can I take in TNEA?
Every candidate can take Open Competition (OC) seats. BC, BCM, MBC/DNC, SC, SCA and ST candidates also take the seats reserved for their own community, and SCA candidates can also take SC seats. Government school students (Class 6 to 12 in Tamil Nadu government schools) also have 7.5% of seats reserved for them, with tuition, hostel and development fees paid by the government.
What is a closing mark?
The lowest cutoff mark that got a seat in that college, branch and community in any round of TNEA 2026. A seat with a closing mark at or below your cutoff went to a candidate like you last year.
Which colleges are not in TNEA?
Deemed and private universities admit through their own entrance exams or JEE Main, not TNEA: for example VIT, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Sathyabama, Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (SIMATS) and Amrita. Colleges with similar names, such as SRM Valliammai, Saveetha Engineering College or Vel Tech High Tech, are TNEA colleges. IITs, NITs and IIITs admit through JoSAA.
