Overview

CLAT PG is the postgraduate paper of the Common Law Admission Test, conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities for LL.M. admissions; the 2027 paper is on 6 December 2026 and applications close on 31 October 2026. The Consortium names the test by admission year, so the current cycle is CLAT 2027, which its FAQs describe as covering admissions to the 5-year integrated LL.B. and LL.M. programmes that start in 2027-28. The PG instructions page refers to 26 NLUs, and the affiliates page lists NTPC Limited as a public sector unit that has signed an MoU to use CLAT 2027 scores. The undergraduate paper is covered on the separate CLAT 2027 page.

Participating universities and tie-breaker

The participating-universities page lists 27 institutions and campuses, each with a link to its e-brochure; intake, reservation, fees and courses are in those brochures. NRI and NRI-sponsored seats are handled by the NLUs directly, and the Consortium does not allot them. If candidates have equal marks, the tie is broken first by higher age and then by a computerised draw of lots.

Exam Pattern

The PG paper tests legal comprehension on the mandatory subjects of the undergraduate LL.B. programme.

SectionQuestionsMarks
Objective section (passage-based multiple-choice questions)120120
Total120120
  • Mode and duration: offline test of 120 minutes, 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on 6 December 2026 (2:00 PM to 4:40 PM for PwD candidates).
  • Marking: 1 mark for each correct answer; 0.25 mark deducted for each wrong answer.
  • Question type: extracts from primary legal materials such as court decisions, statutes or regulations, each followed by questions on comprehension, awareness of the related legal issues, summarising the passage and applying knowledge of the field of law.
  • Descriptive section: the guide to PG-CLAT 2027 says there will be no descriptive section, but the question paper format page still lists two essays of 25 marks each (800 words), evaluated only for candidates scoring 40% (35% for SC, ST, PwD) in the objective section. The two official pages conflict, so the final notification should settle it.
  • Tie-breaker: higher age, then a computerised draw of lots.
